Dragon Diary: Destiny Bound in Dark Magic by Meagan Poetschlag invites readers into the mystical land of Angoleth. In a world teetering on the edge of ruin beneath the rule of a tyrannical king, we meet the dragon Ruinar, who is born into a prophecy steeped in darkness. Ruinar emerges with powers that suggest he’s destined to bring devastation. But instead of succumbing to that fate, he fights it and chooses a path of compassion, resistance, and hard-earned self-control. As Ruinar matures, he faces treacherous forces both within and without: ancient curses, magical trials, and a kingdom that fears what he might become. Told in an immersive first-person voice, this is a deeply introspective fantasy where the central conflict is not just between good and evil, but between destiny and choice.
Author Meagan Poetschlag has a talent for the unexpected, and she brings a refreshing twist to the dragon fantasy genre by making her protagonist not a fearsome beast, but a soul in conflict that we can really get to know. Thanks to a close eye for detail and sensitive narration, Ruinar’s internal struggle is just as compelling as the world-threatening danger around him. I loved how the book challenges traditional fantasy archetypes: this isn’t a story about defeating evil with brute force, but about choosing to be better when everything tells you not to. The world of Angoleth is developed with just the right mix of political intrigue, magical danger, and heart. Overall, Dragon Diary is a beautifully layered fantasy full of fire, soul, and unforgettable choices, and it's a powerful read for anyone who loves morally complex magic and dragons with depth.
