Drive is an engaging opening in The Volunteers series by John Nuckel. It is set in the late 1800s and in modern day New York, and it features compelling historical characters, a story that links troubling events in contemporary society to a secret society established by a captain from Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, a secret society that has had the backing of the most influential bankers and industrialists. Annie Falcone is a respected New York police officer hired by the descendants of the Volunteers — first members of the secret society — to protect one of the greatest technological minds in the US from his deadly Chinese adversary. But there is more to the assignment than Annie suspects and she will be playing a role she never chose to play. Will instinct be enough to make her see the intrigue in the game, and can she navigate the complex world she is suddenly thrown into without getting broken herself?
This is a powerful thriller with relevant historical references. The author puts life into the narrative by making fictitious characters out of some of the well-known personalities in history and putting them in the midst of conflicts. Readers encounter Woodbury Kane, Jacob Riis, and Roosevelt in their first fight against Tammany Hall, and it feels like history. The characters are real and readers will be thrilled to witness the game of power, navigate through the intrigue, and feel the pulse of the action that punctuates every page of this compelling story. Drive will put you on the edge of your seat, take you to unexpected places, and take you into the company of fascinating characters. It feels so real that one almost believes the story.
