Cassidy Salem’s Dying for Data: Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth Book 2 is a mystery story set in Washington DC. The plot centers on two issues, immigration and computer hacking, that are much in the news today. Characters/suspects include an undocumented young man from San Salvador, his brother who is American, the brother’s girlfriend, an attractive Russian woman with a dubious past. The main character and chief attraction of Dying for Data is 20-something Adina from whose point of view the story is told. She gets involved in solving the murder and other crimes of money laundering and gang activity, just because she wants to help her Russian friend. Adina is your typical all-round nice girl, intelligent and loyal, helping with rescue puppies, and in search of the right mate. Jonathan, the detective on the case, may just be the one.
We follow Adina’s life from her basement apartment to her job at an energy think tank and her dates. The story works because of her presence, although one could still hope for a little more complexity. However, Salem has some nice details about Adina’s experiences, descriptions of various restaurants and the food they serve, apartment furnishings, and Adina’s favorite clothes from turtlenecks and “comfy” jeans to a pretty blue A-line skirt. The book is a fun read and I am looking forward to more of Adina’s adventures in the future.
