A Foolish Proposal by Kasey Stockton is the first book in the Regency series, The Gentlemen’s Gamble. What started as a foolish bet among friends, when survival was uncertain, became a serious wager that Tristan Shepherd could not afford to lose. He had to find a wife quickly or be the last single man standing. Being the second son, Tristan didn’t have the financial security the other men had; he couldn’t even support a wife. He would have to marry someone with a large dowry. Caroline Whitby thought she was within hours of a proposal when her brother’s old friend ruined it. She couldn’t afford to marry someone without funds; she must secure someone who could refill the coffers for her brother’s future. Will money be the determining factor that separates Tristan and Caroline?
I love how The Gentlemen’s Gamble series centers on seven men racing to the altar to avoid a bet placed when they all thought they were going to die. A Foolish Proposal keeps the reader guessing as to whether Tristan Shepherd has found his bride or if the practicality of funds will keep Caroline and him apart. The pace accelerates, then twists when the characters hit another block in their relationship. Their hesitation to move forward, driven by their affection, opens the possibility that they might miss what they are looking for in life. The story grows with the characters as their love develops, and they prioritize their needs. Kasey Stockton has mastered the art of conflicting love and relationships and then resolves them with a surprising twist. I highly recommend this author and thoroughly enjoyed A Foolish Proposal.
