Dynamite Runs in the Family by Cabot Barden is a story of love, of courage, of murder and ghosts, all taking place in a traditional Southern setting. Louise Williams moves into a haunted boarding house with her best friend Melrose while they undergo training to become nurses. There, Louise encounters the ghost, finds her true love, an instructor by the name of Drew, and marries him. They move to the country when Drew is offered a job with better pay and Louise gives birth to three children, all boys. Shortly after they move to a better house, Drew is diagnosed with cancer, dying a few months later. Toby, Louise’s middle son, grows up to become a successful singer, but loses his wife to illness along the way, leaving him with two children to bring up. While Drew was alive, he witnessed a murder and helped put the perpetrator away, only to be threatened by the murderer. Now he is out of prison and looking for the people who put him away. Join Louise and Toby in their bid to survive the trials of life.
Dynamite Runs in the Family by Cabot Barden was interesting. I found it a little jumpy – things seemed to move so fast – but there was a lot of information in the book and a lot going on at any one time. I particularly liked the beginning where the history of the haunted house was explained. With a good story line and characters, could this possibly be made into a TV serial somewhere along the line? I also think that this may have been better split into two books - Louise's story and Toby's story.
