Echoes Along the Shore by Angela Grey and Paige Peterson is the third book in the Echoes in the North Country series. Leah, a nurse and writer, goes camping at Lake Superior with her husband and brother in search of peace. What they encounter is anything but peaceful. On the first night, they are awakened by sirens, police tape being strung, and the uneasy sounds surrounding death. As a group gathers, they are united by this occurrence. The next day, drawn together by circumstances, they set out on a hike to another campsite, where they discover something disturbing. Then, one of them is gone. Where proximity was meant to provide security, it now becomes suffocating. As bodies accumulate, campers unravel. Leah keeps an almost poetic written record of what happens. Confidence begins to look like arrogance and nervousness like guilt. When the group, affected by the dark events around them, begins to look at each other with suspicion, will the evidence pile up and the killer be caught?
Angela Grey and Paige Peterson's psychological thriller is told from Leah’s point of view. She makes cryptic notes that summarize what happens in short, sharp terms. Through Leah’s writing, observations, and thoughts, the reader is given a one-sided view of what takes place. This view of one person’s emotions and thoughts helps build the suspense and paranoia that unfold throughout the story. As the setting changes with the time of day and night, mist and clear skies shift, bringing suspense, fear, and relief to the characters and the reader alike. The authors describe how a shared circumstance intensifies the campers' feelings of isolation, emphasizing that a person’s circumstances can isolate them even among others. When caught up in a life-threatening, terrifying situation, people become affected by fear, unsure of whom they can trust and whom they cannot. Echoes Along the Shore uses the geography and weather of Lake Superior to heighten emotions and build to a climax in which some people break, and others hold. A gripping, atmospheric, suspenseful novel.
