Edelweiss by Lloyd Hall is a young adult romance set in a post-apocalyptic world where the protagonist battles some internal struggles. The story opens centuries after a global flood reshaped Earth. Life in the snowy, isolated town of June seems idyllic, at least on the surface. While nothing changes much in the town, Olivia's arrival offers something exciting for the townsfolk, especially Ava. Olivia is a shy high schooler, contrasted with the bright and daring Ava. The two become fast friends and uncover something unexpected: underground tunnels in their small town. There, the two friends find forgotten technology and a sinister secret involving androids. What begins as innocent curiosity soon spirals into a dangerous unraveling of the truth, one that could shake June’s foundations and jeopardize everything. What will Olivia and Ava do? Can they stay safe while shaking everyone's beliefs to the core?
Author Lloyd Hall beautifully blends science fiction, romance, and mystery into the plot. The town of June is perfect! It seems ideal on the surface, a town reborn from ruin, and provides a convincing contrast to the underlying conspiracy. Olivia's journey of discovery, growth, and trust is engaging and relatable. She is the perfect protagonist and a great narrator. Her relationship with Ava adds a sweet and relatable dimension. They perfectly complement each other while also adding depth to the story. Olivia and Ava's relationship is thoughtfully created, full of emotion and youthful sincerity. The world-building is incredible and effective, slowly peeling back layers of the town’s snowy tranquility to reveal a darker, more complex society built on secrets and control. Edelweiss is an entertaining, thrilling, and thought-provoking story that will entertain you until the last page.
