Enough to Share by Mary Helen Berg is a children’s book set in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. It introduces kids to two unusual animals: the Spirit Bear, a rare bear species, and the Sea Wolf, a wolf that swims along the coast, hunting in the ocean. The book explains how the rainforest once had enough food and space for all living things, from salmon to trees. However, as the story continues, actions such as logging, pollution, overfishing, and climate change begin to threaten this balance. Fewer fish, damaged forests, and storms make it harder for animals to survive. As such, they must now compete for much-needed resources. Fortunately, the book also shows how people are trying to protect the rainforest and restore balance once again.
Mary Helen Berg’s Enough to Share uses calm, engaging storytelling to introduce children to environmental concerns. The writing is simple and easy for children to understand. Sue Todd’s illustrations bring warmth to each page without pulling attention away from the overall story. The Great Bear Rainforest is portrayed as both a real place and a space for learning, revealing how people, animals, and land are connected. The Spirit Bear and Sea Wolf are presented more as symbols of the ecosystem than as characters with their own stories, and that fits the book well. The story does a great job of explaining that nature works best when nothing more than necessary is taken. Overall, this fascinating book will engage children who love animals, nature, and science. It is also an ideal choice for adults who want a simple way to introduce conservation and environmental care to their kids.
