When children hear the word “hero,” they often think of superheroes with capes and superpowers found in comic books and movies. However, Haelee P. Moone knows that heroes come in all forms and sizes. In Everyday Heroes, she shares a story about how a teacher, Ms. Patrice, teaches her class that her hero is her dad and why, even without a cape or superpowers, he is her favorite hero. This causes the students to rethink their definition of heroes and realize the importance of real-life heroes. Many mention a parent. One great lesson the students learn from their teacher is that anything is possible with a little courage and a lot of love. Even children can be heroes when they learn to do acts of kindness and to be selfless.
Haelee P. Moone sees writing books like Everyday Heroes as one way to make a positive difference. Her writing style is easy for elementary school children to understand, and the illustrations by Arsalan Khan are congruent with the text. This book will help children exchange their awe of comic superheroes for the love and respect that real superheroes deserve. After your child reads this book, assist them in examining their beliefs concerning superheroes. Then, help them in identifying those around them who are heroes. Help your child plan a selfless act of kindness for a different person weekly or occasionally. This is a great book to promote the reality of human heroes. I recommend it as you teach your children how to honor these often-forgotten heroes.
