A day at the beach is not uncommon, but this book finds its way to the top of my list. Sara and her family visit the beach as they often do with Mommy, Daddy, and baby Hallie. The first thing Sara wants to do is make her Famous Seaweed Soup. She asks Daddy to help, but he is busy setting up camp. Mommy is busy with baby Hallie. Baby Hallie is way too busy being a baby. And so it goes for the rest of the steps needed to make Sara’s seaweed soup. Antoinette Truglio Martin captures the family scene perfectly, and we discover all the fascinating things that might be found on a beach that show up in Sara’s soup.

This book was initially published in 1993. Thanks to independent publishing, it is once again available to the public. It is a delightful read, and Antoinette Truglio Martin has seamlessly woven in a message that if you want something badly enough and persevere, it might be possible to get what you want. Penny Weber’s illustrations are exquisite, a mix of art and the real thing. That’s the only way I can put it. Throughout the story, you feel you are joining the family for a day at the beach.
