Finley the Frog and the Magical Wishing Flower by Pria Dee follows Finley, the smallest frog in Croaksville. He longs to be athletic like his family. But he is so tiny, a slow swimmer, and he cannot jump very high. Everyone except his friend, Emma, teases him. But one day, he finds a wishing flower that only blooms every ten years. He is excited to share the news with Emma. At her house, he makes his first wish to be the highest jumper and the strongest swimmer. When he tests the wish, sure enough, he can jump way up high and is able to swim to the forbidden middle. But when a hungry water snake and a crow remind him of why his mom always forbade him from going to the middle, he uses his flower to undo his wish. Then a week of rain begins to flood the pond, and the frog council panics. With one precious petal left and a town that needs help, what should Finley wish for?

There is so much to love about this story, and readers will admire Finley and Emma’s friendship. Along with Pria Dee’s simple writing style, David Lock’s bright, high-contrast illustrations display action and emotion, from the snake’s yellow eyes, Finley’s fear when the crow catches him in its beak, the grey clouds, and stormy scenes. But even the big moments remain kid-friendly and easy to follow. The author not only offers a moralistic story but also a lightly educational section about northern leopard frogs. This further engages young readers and keeps their attention until the very end. Fans of try-again stories like Rachel Bright and Jim Field’s The Koala Who Could are sure to love Finley the Frog and the Magical Wishing Flower.

Finley the Frog and the Magical Wishing Flower by Pria Dee follows the titular Finley, who is the smallest frog in his family and school, often finishing last in swimming and hopping activities compared to his older siblings and classmates. He enjoys reading, singing in the choir, and spending time with his friend Emma, who plays games with him without complaint. One day, while Emma is sick, Finley discovers a rare wishing flower at the edge of the pond, which has three petals capable of granting wishes. He uses one petal to gain strength, allowing him to hop higher and swim faster, but this also has unexpected consequences that test his judgment. With two petals left, Finley gets a better understanding of the power and the responsibilities the flower carries; he must decide how to best use its magic.

Finley the Frog and the Magical Wishing Flower by Pria Dee is a delightful little children's book, unique in its Michigan-centric natural setting, and familiar in its celebration of friendship, hope, and learning about what makes each of us special and good souls. I like that Finley is eager to try new things after his first wish, but it is his use of the second wish and the promise of the third that is just wonderful. The illustrations by David Lock are very cute, rendered in a full color, earthy palette of classic drawings, breathing visual life into Finley’s expressions and the environment he inhabits. Overall, this is a heartening story with gentle lessons that brilliantly carried us through two evenings of bedtime routine as my youngest reader and I enjoyed it together. Very highly recommended.
