I’m usually a fast reader, and it is not unusual for me to read several books a day. Occasionally, along comes a book that makes me want to slow down and savor every word. Forgotten Memories is that type of book. Author Bernice Camp sent this book to me in manuscript form. Her writing is clean, clear, and uncomplicated.
Forgotten Memories is narrated by Ella, the lead character. Camp allows you to delve into the real Ella, a social worker with a kind and loving heart. Ella has a love interest, David. While their relationship is interesting, it isn’t the focus of this story.
Ellen is Ella’s mother; at first appearance, she is cold and rude, but after you learn more of the story, you find sympathy for her. Ella is surrounded by people that love and care about her. I was particularly struck by the relationship between Ella and reformer teacher.
For a year, dreams have plagued Ella’s sleep. She reaches out to her former teacher, Mrs. Tyler, whom she feels she can trust. With Mrs. Tyler’s support, Ella searches for the answers that evade her. Like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces fit together one piece at a time. Her mother is not forthcoming with answers to any of Ella’s questions. Eventually, the truth comes to light.
It was very difficult to write a summary of Forgotten Memories without giving away the secret or the essence of the plot. I figured out the big secret early in the book, but that did not ruin the story for me. The ending was sweet, and yet I was left wanting more. I think the wedding would have made a better ending. The almost supernatural connection between Ella and the secret could have been played up a bit more. I liked the way the relationship between Ella and Ellen developed. All in all, I think Camp has a winner.
