David Singer started playing the clarinet when he was a child. His father helped him choose the right instrument and study with the best teachers. Thanks to his family's constant moves, he learned to think big and realized that anything was possible. Later, he earned a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he specialized. Despite traveling to Europe with great expectations, he did not achieve the desired success. Upon returning to America, he gained a better understanding of the challenges in the music world. He faced numerous obstacles in his efforts to achieve economic and personal stability, balancing various jobs with his passion for music. I loved how honest and open David Singer is in recounting his life. Each anecdote is captivating and teaches a lesson, which keeps the narrative engaging. He shares tender moments, such as his approach to music to impress a girl, and emotional ones, such as the change in how he understands his parents over the years. He also highlights respect and admiration for his teachers. Although the subject revolves around music, the language is clear and accessible, without technicalities. The descriptions are fantastic, vividly portraying the environment and capturing the essence of each decade. The memoir offers a realistic view of an artist facing economic and personal challenges. It is inspiring to see how he matured from adolescence to become the man he is today. From Cab Driver to Carnegie Hall is a testament to inspiration and resilience.
