Galaxy Walkers is a middle-grade novel by Kris Paulsen. Lyra Stewart wants nothing more than for her best friend, Archie, to help her with English so she can go on the sixth-grade field trip to the zoo. Within moments, the friends are whisked away by "protectors" from beyond this world who claim Lyra and Archie are in danger. Continuing her father's legacy, Saros is destroying entire worlds, and the children are taken to Alora, a home planet for refugees who fight against Saros, to begin their training. A deep secret is behind Saros's evil plan and reveals the reason Lyra and Archie are in danger of either being recruited or killed by her minions. Lyra and Archie are told they are Galaxy Walkers, but they may be something a little more special.
Kris Paulsen's world-building skills are unparalleled. Young readers will learn everything they need to know about Alora and the fight to save other worlds as they turn the pages. Alora is a harmonious place with intelligent beings and creatures that most readers only know from fairytales. Paulsen's story reveals betrayal and children with multiple powers - some that are the same and others that differ from their peers. The story touches on Lyra's dyslexia and another character's use of sign language and raises a reader's awareness about differences, changing hardships into unique abilities. Lyra and Archie experience a great deal of growth, and it's a great start to a series children will read with enthusiasm. Youngsters who enjoy science fiction, action, and adventure will love Galaxy Walkers.
