Giant Legs: Little Fears by Tuula Pere tells the story of a young boy named Elliot. Elliot is shy, introverted, and struggles with social anxiety during large family gatherings. During his grandfather’s birthday party, Elliot, with the loving support of his Uncle Stephen, builds self-confidence by exploring the practice of walking on stilts. By the end of the story, Elliot looks forward to future family gatherings where he can laugh, play, and enjoy time with others. Giant Legs has a deep plot and beautiful illustrations by Catty Flores. Tuula Pere provides concepts that young audiences will find relatable and insight for parents on how to help their children conquer social anxiety.
I shared Giant Legs with my 2-year-old daughter; the narrative is both well-paced and short enough so that she stayed engaged from beginning to end. My daughter is also shy at family gatherings, and I found Elliot's anxiety and social development to be realistic and thought-provoking. When Stephen helped Elliot conquer his anxiety through playful activities, I questioned ways that I might do the same for my child. When Elliot explored the world from the vantage point of stilts, he grew in self-confidence from his experience and new perspective. The world was no longer as scary to Elliot as it once seemed. This symbolizes the growth that many people experience while learning to shift their perspective to conquer fear and anxiety. Overall, I found Giant Legs to be a meaningful read for both children and adults, and I look forward to more of Tuula Pere’s stories.
