For many people - myself included - the idea of having your own horse seems like a dream come true. But at the same time, the practical considerations of horse ownership present an overwhelming responsibility, especially if you have next to zero experience working with horses. In this context, H is for Horse by Dr. Terrie Sizemore offers a very specific branch of knowledge, namely medical needs of equines. As a veterinary guide, it tackles questions about parasites, diseases, lameness, reproduction, and dental care. For example, there are sections on castration aftercare, how special diets can be used to address specific health issues, and the contents of a first-aid kit for your barn. The author also provides valuable tips on how to determine whether a foal is ready for its first vaccination and how to conduct a lameness test.
The format of H is for Horse is easy to navigate, giving the reader vital information in bite-sized chunks, without overwhelming them. Knowledge is balanced with generous amounts of equine eye candy, ranging from adorable foals to full-grown horses in different roles, at work and at rest. There are action shots of working or sports horses at the top of their game, as well as quirky ponies, just chilling with their humans. The author equips would-be horse owners with a holistic template that informs them on when and how to schedule vital, preventative procedures. It explains the why behind the need for regular hoof and dental care and demystifies the science behind various diagnostic tests. The chapter on dental care is particularly insightful, as it also provides would-be owners with a relatively reliable benchmark for determining the age of a horse lacking documentation. Finally, Dr Terrie Sizemore provides a baseline for what constitutes normal health parameters in horses, and a site-by-site discussion on how to interpret and communicate vital information on a sick horse's symptoms. This book is strongly recommended for anyone seriously considering buying or adopting a horse.
