In Heartfelt Connections: How Animals and People Help One Another by Anne Beall we learn about a young girl learning to walk with braces and is given the thrill of being asked to walk her therapy dog, Abbey. With no instructions needed, Abbey would walk to the end of the leash, then sit and wait for the girl to catch up, before getting up and once again walking to the end of the leash. The short walk took half an hour, but the result was a girl who had the opportunity to walk a special dog who “knew just what the little girl needed.” Animals have an amazing ability to sense and communicate with their human handlers. It’s stories like this that revitalize the empathy humans and animals share. It is this innate ability to connect that makes animals excellent therapists in nursing homes, special needs facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and anywhere else where a non-human, caring companion is a welcome, positive, and healing experience. There are even dogs trained to help young people learn to read. Of course, there are connections between humans and animals if the human saves, or rescues, an animal.
Bonding connects humans and animals in powerful ways. Anne Beall’s book Heartfelt Connections is an engaging and fascinating collection of studies and stories about this unique and special connection. The book is divided into chapters featuring specific animal groups, beginning with how animals have connected to and helped humans, followed by accounts of how humans have helped animals. The narrative is thorough and interesting to read and will certainly bring tears to readers’ eyes. One hears people talk about their heartdog or their hearthorse and this book will certainly support this theory about these wonderful and heartwarming connections.
