Hell Toupee by Mitch Friedman is a true story told in a very entertaining manner. Mitch has just turned 30 and is balding and hates it. He has watched many infomercials for the Head Restart for Men and believes this is the answer to his problem. Mitch takes us along on the first visit and all subsequent catastrophic appointments. The hair piece turns out to look ridiculous and makes his life miserable as he struggles with its consequences over the next year. Mitch takes us down his Memory Lane with stories from his boyhood, his first girlfriend, the good and bad times of college, his trips to Europe and the jobs he never really enjoyed, and his first New York apartment. We meet his friends and family on the way, and laugh and cry along with Mitch.
The title Hell Toupee is exactly what it says; the anguish and agony of having a very bad hair system glued to your head and the embarrassment it caused. Mitch Friedman has written a funny and compassionate story about the horrors the “hair system” caused him while sharing his past and present life stories with us. I do not usually read non-fiction but the title and description of this book caught my attention and I really enjoyed it. I could relate to his mother’s nagging, to his shyness, and some of his pains and joys. Hell Toupee is a winner not to be missed. Mitch Friedman is a writer with a great future for being a top notch author.
