In Her Broken Road by Jenny Alexander, readers meet Elianna. She has grown up believing she has only one purpose in life: to become a wife and to be completely loved by one man. That sentiment has shaped her life choices, and as she moves into adulthood, it leads her into a series of relationships and marriages that, sadly, ultimately fail. It seems that hidden secrets, emotional distance, and loss keep shattering the future she imagined. Along the way, she drifts from and loses her faith, but tentatively reaches for it as she wrestles with grief, anger, and questions about God’s goodness. Then she hears the story of the Samaritan woman. She begins to see herself in this woman, prompting a profound moment of reflection. So, will Elianna ever find her perfect match, or is she doomed to keep getting it wrong?
I found myself drawn to Her Broken Road by Jenny Alexander because the title reminded me of a Dolly Parton quote: “If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.” I wanted to know if the woman on the cover did indeed start paving a new one. Elianna’s journey was like a roller coaster. She’d be happy, then sad—and the cycle would repeat. This pattern felt realistic, and I imagine many readers will recognize it. The writing is straightforward, yet down-to-earth. There are some heavy themes like divorce and grief, but they’re not overdone. I recommend this book to fans of Christian women’s fiction or those who would enjoy a quick read. It’s the kind of story that leaves you thinking about your own ideas of love, worth, and second chances long after you close the book.
