Here Comes the Mess by Marta Almansa Esteva shares the ups and downs as young Rob learns to eat solid food. Rob's preschool-age sister narrates the text. Rob is six months old, and it is time to introduce him to the dinner table. His sister hints that some big messes are coming. It starts with spaghetti that ends up everywhere but in Rob's mouth. The messes continue as Rob navigates using utensils and cups. Some foods Rob enjoys, and some of them he'd rather not have again. Rob's parents tell his sister that she also was a mess maker when she started learning to eat. She discovers that learning to eat can be difficult but realizes that it is a part of growing up.

Here Comes the Mess is the perfect story to share with children who have young siblings. Marta Almansa Esteva doesn't shy away from the challenges that come with feeding young children, but the tone is always positive and patient. Esteva does a great job of reminding young ones that they too were once babies and also very messy. The illustrations by Silvia Romeral Andres are soft, warm, and colorful. The family cat is often included in the spreads and endures the mess with the rest of the family. Parents looking for books to help their older children understand their younger siblings are always necessary. The book zeroes in on one particular element of a child's growing up and does it humorously and joyfully. Parents and children will appreciate the messy fun.
