Hickory Trail (Memories of a Home Book 3) by Scott Douglas Vaughan is a novel based on the author's time growing up on Hickory Trail, a place situated two miles from downtown Acorn in north Georgia. Frank Wilcox is the author's alter ego and the central figure in this homegrown drama. He shares the family home with his parents and brothers. Frank tells us of his first girlfriend, his first job and his first party, an event which he was less than happy to host! There is a strong Christian influence and the First Baptist Church is central to family life. There are some dark times for Frank and his work with the local newspaper brings him into contact with rather less savory aspects of society. We also hear of his passion for writing and his plans to begin his freshman year at the University of Georgia.

Scott Vaughan writes a delightful and thoroughly fascinating tale of a teenage boy growing up in a close-knit family in 1970s Georgia. Those us who were teenagers during that time will relate to everything from the films (The Godfather) to the iconic posters (Farah Fawcett) and the board games (Monopoly). This is something of a social commentary peppered with really interesting anecdotes. It provides a genuine flavor of what it was like to grow up in an age which included a great deal of social upheaval including growing opposition to the Vietnam War and an increase in recreational drug use which resulted in Nixon's 'War on Drugs'. Hickory Trail is an absorbing and thought-provoking book providing poignant reminders of a bygone era.
