Highland Storm is book one in the Highland Chronicles Series by Elizabeth Rose. Set in 1385, Scotland, the book follows the burning feud that has existed between the MacKeefe and MacNab clans. Several years ago, an attempt was made to unite the clans through marriage but that failed when the MacNab bride died under mysterious circumstances. The MacNabs blamed the MacKeefes and so the feud continued. That is until Phoebe MacNab’s party runs across a lone MacKeefe rider and attacks without provocation. The attack leads to the death of her men, the kidnapping of the MacKeefe rider and of Phoebe by none other than Hawke MacKeefe, the firstborn son of the legendary highlander, Storm. They are enemies and they should naturally hate each other. But as they get to know each other better, could there finally be hope for lasting peace?
Elizabeth Rose delivers a thrilling highland historical romance. After all, what is a highland story without a good old feud? I loved the complexities of this story. The attraction between Phoebe and Hawke is undeniable from the start but it seems impossible in the circumstances that they will end up together. Then Highland Storm adds backstory that is so relevant to the current events that it isn’t backstory but real-time action. The villains in this story have played a long game in their quest for power and the feud is just a foil for their evil machinations. I loved the camaraderie between Hawke and his cousins. I especially loved Caleb’s pet hunting shenanigans. Highland Storm has so many lessons but I think the most important one is that love conquers all.
