Destroy All Monsters, book two in the Holiday Spirit series, combines gothic horror, romance, adventure, and dark humor in a thrilling adventure destined for greatness. Author John DeGuire recreates age-old monsters and has them working together to simultaneously define their place in the modern world. Readers who grew up with Frankenstein, Dracula, werewolves, the Invisible Man, and King Kong will marvel at their evolution. In contrast, new readers will enjoy following these new heroes. Having read book one, Holiday Spirit, I see that author John DeGuire prefers to open his stories with a bang, hitting the ground running, and never slowing down. In the process, DeGuire has established a reincarnation/regeneration of infamous and famous characters so that new readers will flock to his stories as once readers in the fifties, sixties, and seventies latched onto and never let go of the aforementioned monsters.

Adding to the ingenious remake of characters, DeGuire possesses a clean, "cut to the chase" style of writing that is unique. But these attributes are just the beginning! Into a fast-paced thriller, DeGuire fits references and inferences to recent historical, cultural, and current events that add mountains of entertainment and a strong sense of verisimilitude to the storyline and the characters. Characters and monsters alike are presented in such a manner that they become true to life with all the emotional ups and downs, trials, tribulations, and desires of real-life people. I am a longtime fan of authors Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Ken Stark. John DeGuire has joined that shortlist of favorite horror/paranormal/suspense/thriller authors, and I'm looking forward to his next novel.

Holiday Spirit Book Two: Destroy All Monsters by John DeGuire reimagines classic literary monsters in a thrilling adventure that defies genre expectations. Set in the atmospheric cities of Paris and London, the novel brings together an unlikely group of gothic antiheroes - Count Dracula, Aoife the werewolf, Saul Frankenstein, and Dr. Ellison - as they confront new challenges that test their understanding of redemption and purpose. DeGuire crafts a narrative that blends horror, adventure, and dark humor, creating a unique exploration of monsters who are far more complex than their traditional representations. The story goes beyond simple monster tropes, offering a nuanced examination of identity, belonging, and the ongoing struggle between darkness and the potential for transformation. Through intricate storytelling, DeGuire creates a world that challenges readers' preconceptions about classic monster narratives.

Author John DeGuire has an innovative and deeply compelling approach to storytelling that breathes new life into classic monster archetypes. As a huge fan of traditional horror and gothic monsters, I was captivated by his ability to set this novel apart from existing narratives, with the European setting bringing so much detail and flavor. The rich atmospheric qualities of DeGuire's writing enhance the gothic tone and bring new emotional moods to the characters' individual journeys, while also offering an interesting clash between intense horror and moments of unexpected levity. DeGuire creates a witty, slick narrative that is simultaneously thrilling and emotionally engaging, with cinematic action sequences and underlying character development that keeps readers deeply invested in the monsters' personal struggles and potential for redemption. Overall, I recommend Holiday Spirit Book Two: Destroy All Monsters as a groundbreaking and uniquely imaginative exploration of monster mythology.

Destroy All Monsters by John DeGuire is the second entry in the Holiday Spirit series. It is a gripping sequel to the fantasy romance Holiday Spirit, which sweeps readers into an enthralling supernatural journey. Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Killington, Vermont, and extending through iconic cities like Paris and London, this horror saga deftly merges suspense with a touch of romance. This story introduces nuanced and tautly sculpted characters like Count Dracula, Aoife the werewolf, Saul Frankenstein, and Dr. Ralph Ellison, better known as the Invisible Man. Readers are pulled into the web of their problematic existences as each character battles their unique demons. These characters are trapped in their natures, each seeking redemption, with villains in the tale that take readers in unexpected directions.

The characters are familiar antiheroes that John DeGuire has recreated with unique psyches and troubles, immersing them in richly created settings and putting them into situations that test them in more than one way. The prose is gorgeous, and the author infuses the writing with captivating descriptions and engaging dialogues. The pacing is fast, and readers are pulled forward by the suspense — always wanting to know what happens next. The story features action-packed scenes, moral dilemmas, and twists that readers won’t see coming. I was drawn in by the sharp humor and the author’s ability to portray monstrous characters with humanity. The illustrations by Bill Sienkiewicz make the story even more enticing. Destroy All Monsters is a mesmerizing novel packed with adventure and humor that reads well as a standalone.

Holiday Spirit Book Two: Destroy All Monsters by John DeGuire talks about a world where monsters and men collide; Aoife, a fierce werewolf, teams up with iconic figures like Frankenstein, Dracula, and King Kong. Their journey is filled with risks and betrayal. While Aoife fights to save her friend and Frankenstein seeks revenge after a tragic loss, each character struggles with their challenges and grapples with the blurred line between humanity and monstrosity. As betrayal and the chilling consequences of scientific experimentation haunt them, the group must fight to stay alive. In the end, the consequences of their actions lead to a bittersweet reckoning with their legacies.

The settings are richly atmospheric, and the tone mirrors the internal conflict of the characters. The combination of action scenes, like Aoife's bold rescue mission and Frankenstein's contemplation on his wedding day, adds emotional depth. DeGuire's thematic exploration of identity and revenge elevates the narrative, turning every conflict into more than just a fight; an emotional and personal struggle. Through this balance, the novel becomes both thrilling and deeply introspective. DeGuire's writing style has evolved with a strong cinematic quality that brings action scenes to life. Bringing famous literary characters and modern societal critiques together for contemporary audiences gives a mix of nostalgia and meaning. The story explores societal inequality, environmental collapse, and the impact of personal and collective actions while delivering an action-packed narrative. The ensemble cast is a key strength. Each character is multi-dimensional, with their emotions and internal struggles providing a rich emotional core. DeGuire brings a human side to his monstrous characters, breaking away from typical stereotypes and making the story feel both fresh and relatable. Destroy All Monsters looks at the thin line between humans and monsters, and encourages readers to think about their own lives and choices, making them reconsider what it truly means to be human.

In the second book of the Holiday Spirit series, Destroy All Monsters by John DeGuire, Vlad Dracula III was kidnapped by a group dedicated to killing all monsters. Dracula, along with his wife Aoife and their friend Saul Frankenstein, had discovered a sinister scheme orchestrated by the witch Bridgett, who was responsible for the disappearances of children in Killington. The witch Maria was hiding in a safe house set up by her mentor Bridgett. In return for assisting in the kidnapping of Dracula, Aoife, and Saul, Maria planned to reunite with her captured children, Dorian and Ivy. The Artificial Institute of Development was home to some of the leading scientists in the world and was established on the principles of preservation. Dr. Moreau had kidnapped Dracula, Aoife, and Saul to obtain their genetic material for preservation, with the only escape from the Island of Dr. Moreau leading to death.

The Holiday Spirit: Destroy All Monsters by John DeGuire was incredibly well-crafted and captivating. From the very first page to the last, I was completely engrossed and found it hard to put the book down. The story was filled with intense action, and the surprising twists kept me engaged throughout. I flipped through the pages as quickly as I could, fearing I might miss something important. Some scenes were quite brutal and described in vivid detail, yet others had a humorous touch. The comedic elements provided a pleasant distraction from the genuine horror that was taking place. These iconic characters have received a contemporary update, making them both recognizable and believable. Dracula, his wife Aoife, and their friends were an outstanding team and showed genuine care for one another. It was an excellently written story, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
