These words greeted me in the introduction, “As you are now reading this introduction, I think it is reasonable for me to deduce that you feel or know that you have a low self-esteem and would like to increase it.” Well, no. My self-esteem is not desperately low to the point that it makes me miserable but I’m interested to put it up a notch. Tony Furlong uses circus elephants as the core paradigm, how human trainers are able to control these powerful beasts. They condition these elephants since young, and make the animals accept the rules that the humans impose on them as the only way they should live.
He puts emphasis on two words; believes and belief,“...how absolutely vital it is for you to recognise the relevance and importance of this element of the human psyche and what a massive part it is playing now at this moment and forever will play in your life.” Using examples such as Columbus, the Wright brothers, and even quoting Frank Zappa, Furlong explains the difference between what people believe in how things should be and what you believe you can do. There is even a technique for readers to try to stop the negative internal voice from dominating the mind. Self-esteem isn't everything. According to Furlong, it is the language of psychology, it's subjective. It is emotionally based.
Tony Furlong’s How To Increase Your Self-Esteem And Avoid Becoming A Circus Elephant is only 29 pages. This is the shortest self-help book that I have ever read, therefore I try not to give everything away. On the whole, this short book is solid and unique.
