Hunting the Red Fox by W. Kenneth Tyler Jr follows Roger Mace, an amateur golf historian and aspiring writer, who stumbles upon the extraordinary life story of Perry Barnes. What begins as a quest to document Perry’s time on the PGA tour of the 1950s turns into a wild tale of espionage, jewel heists, and redemption. Perry reveals how a teenage mistake landed him in a secret WWII Army special operations unit, training him in sabotage, espionage, and self-preservation. After the war, Perry’s skills lead him into a life of thievery and danger, culminating in his daring theft of the priceless Mecklenburg Diamond: all in the name of love. With humor, wit, and a colorful cast of characters, this thrilling and romantic adventure unfolds through Roger’s skeptical yet enthralled eyes.

Author W. Kenneth Tyler has a vivid imagination that mixes well with his enthusiasm for history, and this has helped him craft a gripping and imaginative blend of historical fiction, crime, and romance that has you hooked from cover to cover. It’s easy to see that much planning went into the way the intrigue of the plot is crafted, and the dual-timeline structure keeps us on our toes as we explore Perry’s unpredictable life and interesting twists and amusing turns. There are also original themes and unexpected synergy between the golf and espionage elements. This unique and unexpected narrative fusion works with Perry’s charm and complexity as a central foil for the wittily-penned events happening around him. Overall, Hunting the Red Fox is a real caper of a novel that I highly recommend to fans of unusual crime and historical stories.
