Thirty-year-old LAPD detective Ethan Falcone’s life is spiraling down the drain. He’s on leave with a pending charge for excessive use of force and is estranged from his wife, Jessica. One day, the suicidal cop receives a call from a woman named Ruby Von Derriere, a beautiful ex-model in her 40s, but a ruthless business tycoon. She needs Ethan’s help to protect her from her husband Bill Rush, the CEO of United International, whom she thinks is trying to kill her. Ethan agrees, but from that point on he stumbles into a wide-scale conspiracy that will become his worst nightmare.
Mind control, human organ syndicates, and catching an elusive serial killer named Hank – Ethan’s life is anything but serene. I didn’t root for him nor did I dislike him, but it was fascinating to read how his hard life unfolded. Hypnotica: Beginnings by Cory Tsuhako is a thriller set some time in the future, where people have the latest tech BOT (Bionic Organic Terrestrial) life-like humanoid robot, and iTooth, Apple’s eavesdropping microchip implanted in a person’s tooth to serve society’s needs.
Initially, all the events looked as if they were entirely disconnected. In the end, I realized how suitable the story title was. Tsuhako let the plot run loose to some degree, and readers might feel tired and delirious when the story ends. The narrative seems straightforward, but this gritty tale is a uniquely complex read. Somewhat challenging but enjoyable at the same time, I recommend Hypnotica for readers who look for something interesting and different.
