I Am Brave Enough to be the Light, subtitled Herstory: The Healing Journey of a Girl With Chronic Migraine by Miss Penny relates the experiences of a young girl suffering from debilitating chronic migraine. She struggles with its physical, mental, and emotional impact. Her network of friends gives her the motivation to carry on. They are like sisters she can rely on for support whenever her condition leads her into a depressive state. Befriending her fear makes her realize that this can be an asset, a gift that teaches you to find your inner strength against adversity and gives resilience, wisdom, strength, and compassion, along with the courage and acceptance to manage and live through the challenges. It is only when you overcome the fear in your heart that you can heal your infirmities and reach your goal of victory.
I Am Brave Enough to be the Light can also be seen as a guide on how to deal with life's major obstacles, and inspire those in distress to have a positive outlook and attitude by harnessing the strength of a welcoming, caring community. Miss Penny provides artistic and stylized illustrations and rhythmic verses, making the book easy to read for both young and old alike. It tells us that the strength to face our fear comes from the courage inside ourselves and through the encouragement of others who have survived hardship. The book shares inspiring messages about being human, despite weaknesses or impediments, yet still thriving, being productive, and loving. Initially recommended for young readers five to ten years old, the information is still appealing and useful even for adults.
