I Am, I Feel / Yo Soy, Yo Siento is a bilingual children's book by author Maria Calderon that follows a young child as she gently names and navigates her feelings. The story begins with her describing being a little scared when the lights go out, but she reminds herself that she is not the fear—she is herself. As she reflects on other emotions, like sadness when saying goodbye or happiness when feeling loved, she consistently returns to the grounding truth that emotions are part of her experience but do not define who she is. The book includes a thoughtful introduction explaining its purpose: to help children understand that their emotions are valid, but are not their identity. The final pages feature a letter to grown-ups affirming that every child, with all their quiet and loud feelings, is whole and growing and that this is a good and beautiful thing. The story is accompanied by a helpful list of English-Spanish cognates related to emotional learning.

I Am, I Feel / Yo Soy, Yo Siento earns five stars for its heartfelt message, soothing tone, and therapeutic value. It’s written using Whole-Brain and trauma-informed strategies, making it a valuable resource for therapists, teachers, and parents alike. The bilingual format ensures accessibility, and the affirmations and reflection pages add meaningful engagement for caregivers and children. The message—“Feelings are visitors, not identity”—is timely and essential. As a clinical therapist and teacher myself, I will be sharing this book with children and families. I loved it. It is a calm, warm, and empowering read for children and adults alike! I look forward to reading more books from Maria Calderon.
