In I Am Not Sleepy! by Markita Staples-Green, we are introduced to a little girl who doesn’t like to go to sleep. She also doesn’t care for picking up her toys or taking a bath either, but when she’s doing the chore or activity she finds that it’s not that bad after all. There are many things that the little girl doesn’t like or want to do but she ends up changing her mind with such tasks as wearing pajamas and brushing her teeth. She doesn’t want her mom to sing her to sleep at first but then she realizes that she likes the song her mom is singing. Instead of sleeping, she wants to jump and play, but at the same time, she wants her mother to read her a story. Then she goes back and forth between wanting to wear her bonnet to bed or not. Lying down in bed, she tells her mom no kisses, but at the same time telling her that she wants more kisses. When her mother leaves for a moment, she thinks the room is too dark until she concludes that it is just right and finally she falls asleep.
I thought I Am Not Sleepy! was a cute book that shows how children can be at times. Just like the little girl, many children will refuse to do something only to find out that they in fact do enjoy or are okay with it. Even some adults can be difficult at times. The mother is patient with the girl and lets her come to the right conclusion, which in this case was most of the time. The illustrations are also beautifully done and fit perfectly with the storyline. Overall, I found it a fun read and one that I will definitely recommend to friends with small children. Markita Staples-Green has done a wonderful job and I can’t wait to read more of her work.
