Written by H.A. Mitchell, I promise It’s Not Your Fault is a children’s book about mental health. The story starts with Ben, who has suffered a lot within his fifteen years of life. As a result, he carries a heavy burden on his shoulders and struggles with his day-to-day life. It was getting harder and harder for Ben to be okay when he really was not. The story continues to unfold when Ben's good friend Alex becomes a superhero by stepping in and helping him escape the trap within the darkness of his mind.
In my opinion, I Promise It’s Not Your Fault is a wonderfully written piece that showcases not only the mental struggles people silently suffer through but also spreads awareness to children about the importance of mental health. H.A. Mitchell perfectly captured the multiple scenarios and experiences which can cause the mental baggage people carry with them. More importantly, I liked how this book was able to convey the importance of speaking up when there is a person in dire need of help, even if they did not say it out loud. I also really appreciated the repetitive reminder that whatever has happened in the past is not your fault. This reminder allowed me to really grasp the message of how I was not accountable for all the bad things that happened in my life. It was truly a joy to read such a wonderfully crafted message in one book.
