I Want to Be an Athlete and a Teacher (Coby's Athlete and Career Series, Book 1) is a children's book written by Garrett Carter and illustrated by Anahit Aleksanyan. It's suitable for children in kindergarten through third grade. Coby is a young African-American boy who loves playing sports, and he's good at them. He thinks he wants to be an athlete when he grows up and tells his mom about it at the kitchen table. Coby explains that sports is what he really loves and dreams about doing. His mom thinks that's pretty good, but she also thinks he might be good at other things as well. Coby is good at math and helped his younger sister with her homework. He enjoyed that too. Coby realizes that he might like to be a teacher as well as an athlete.
Garrett Carter's children's book, I Want to Be an Athlete and a Teacher (Coby's Athlete and Career Series, Book 1) is a well-written and enjoyable read. The illustrations by Anahit Aleksanyan are top-notch, filled with bright, bold colors and beautifully designed. Coby's mom is supportive and caring, and she never gets preachy or negative about Coby's dreams and aspirations. Her style is laid-back and is designed to get Coby thinking about the other things he really enjoys doing. Coby's a great role model for kids who are thinking about what they want to be when they grow up. There's also a worksheet in the back of the book to help young readers start thinking about the things they enjoy and their own plans for the future. I Want to Be an Athlete and a Teacher (Coby's Athlete and Career Series, Book 1) is highly recommended.
