In If I Were a Fox by Shelley Gill, readers are taken on a lively journey around the world to meet different kinds of foxes and to discover what makes each of them unique. From the desert-dwelling Fennec fox with oversized ears to the Bengal fox with super-strong legs, every page highlights fascinating traits or facts about each kind. With its flowing rhymes, the book mixes a sense of wonder and real-life science, helping children step into the world of foxes as if they were one themselves. Erik Brooks’s vibrant illustrations add warmth and charm, making the book both educational and fun. By the last page, children will realize that whether in the desert, snow, or forest, every fox, while different in many ways, has one thing in common.
Shelley Gill’s If I Were a Fox inspires children to use their imaginations, but also teaches them something about the natural world. As an educator, after reading this fox-centered story, I found myself imagining how I’d use it in a classroom. I could see students eagerly raising their hands to share which fox was their favorite, and telling them mine are the Arctic fox and the red fox. The book also sparks other conversations about climate, adaptation, and the habitats of the foxes. I liked how the rhyming text will have children calling out which words sound the same. Erik Brooks’s artwork brings each fox vividly to life, making each page pop with color and personality. This engaging book belongs in both home and school libraries or any other place where it will inspire wonder and a love of the animal world. Now, what would you do if you had the ears, tail, and quick paws of a fox?
