Author Biography

Olga Petrenko grew up in Ukraine, where she learned to appreciate traditional Eastern European hospitality and homemaking. As an adult, she studied the chemistry of foods, both local and foreign, for their unique effects on the human body and mind. Combining her food science studies with her love for helping others achieve greater intimacy, she poured the next 10 years of her life into creating the recipes contained in her first book, Intimacy On The Plate. She enjoys a fantastic love life with her husband of 35 years, and maintains a diverse herbal garden at home.

In a stunningly beautiful new offering by author and chef Olga Petrenko, Intimacy on the Plate: 200+ Aphrodisiac Recipes to Spice Up Your Love Life at Home Tonight is a guide through gastronomic heaven. As many at home chefs know, the visual appeal of a cookbook definitely adds to the joy involved in preparing a meal, and this book is beautiful from start to finish. The focus of the work, creating and sharing meals with your partner with a special emphasis on aphrodisiacs, is extremely interesting, and the science behind how foods affect the sexes appears to be sound. The book is divided into easy to use sections, including vegetables, fish, seafood, erotic spices, nuts, fruit, chocolate and love potions, and has easy to follow instructions on preparation as well as information on the potential effects of eating particular foods. The beauty of the photos of the food as it is being prepared is only bested by the beauty of the photos of the finished product.

I loved that there are even a few recipes for vegans. The author created a very informative book, listing the most delectable looking ingredients in a colorful and appetizing way. My one complaint was that the pictures, beautiful as they are, do not always mirror the recipes beside them. Being a vegan, I was pleasantly surprised to find several of my favorite dishes listed in the pages. This book is not like any recipe book I have read on the subject. I expected to find the "normal" fare of scallops, fish, shrimp, and other well-known aphrodisiacs. Instead, I found delicious dishes using a beautiful balance of plants and meat that aren't as recognizable as such. It is important to note that the author claims to have been married for over thirty-five exciting years using these recipes. Those who wish to replicate her success will be delighted with the contents of this book.

In addition, each recipe leads to a visually appealing dish that will talk to most of your senses (sight, smell, touch, taste).

As a vegan, I found that a lot of the recipes in Intimacy On The Plate by Olga Petrenko are obviously not suitable, but they can be adjusted with a bit of creativity and the use of meat and dairy alternatives. The book was visually very beautiful. It has such a beautiful design that just browsing through the pages is a celebration for your senses, but what I liked most was how short some of the ingredients lists were (yes, I am that pathetic when it comes to recipes). I often approach recipes like a science fiction book if they look too complicated. My thoughts then are “Oh, lovely. But it’s not going to happen. Ever.” The recipes in this collection seem far more realistic and do-able, even if you would not call yourself a master chef or even a very good cook. It is great to see that there is at least one cookbook author out there who enables readers to create great looking (and probably also great tasting) dishes without going crazy during the process.

I eventually gave in and decided to let my sweet tooth lead me, and I was not disappointed in the taste or the effects!
