What starts off as harmless fun for some friends to prove who is the better player at a particular game deteriorates into chaos for sisters Roise and Caiti when they accidentally cross through a hidden portal that transports the girls to the magical realm of Collin Dubh. The kingdom is in disarray as a dark power wielded by a vengeful witch has forced the surviving inhabitants of this magical realm into hiding. Roise and Caiti soon realize that, to return to their world, they have to help these folk achieve their freedom and fulfill a dangerous prophecy in the process. Only time will tell if they can do this in Colin O'Neill's The Seekers: Only The Sword Of Light Can End The Darkness.
The Seekers is the first book in Colin O'Neill's The Chronicles of Collin Dubh. It explores a subtle family theme beneath the fantasy, seen in how Roise constantly tries to protect Caiti from harm, even as it gradually becomes clear that her little sister is maturing. The world-building draws inspiration from Irish folklore, with pixies, fairies, and even banshees appearing alongside creatures created by O'Neill's lively imagination. The attention to detail is extensive, from the humorous descriptions of the elders' council of Collin Dubh's inhabitants to a tribal leader's explanation of the differences between pixies and fairies. The author highlights the realistic challenges the girls face, such as Caiti's problems when retrieving an artifact. The story is complemented by detailed maps, striking pictures, and explanations of proper pronunciations of the names, adding a unique touch to a captivating novel. I enjoyed reading The Seekers and look forward to the next book in the series.
