The final school bell rings and Cheri is ready to start her summer vacation! Cheri and her best friend, Kara, have great plans but a surprise announcement from Cheri’s mom quickly puts an end to their excitement. Cheri has to go to Maine and spend the summer with her aunt and cousin on a remote island without electricity, running water and no cell phone service! Island Dresses by Roderick J. Robison follows Cheri, Victor and Aunt Claire as they weather a hurricane, explore the island, learn about nature and get glimpses of the past. Cheri discovers that ‘roughing it’ isn’t as bad as she thought it would be, even when it means wearing Island Dresses – old clothes that are only good for living on the island. It’s not the summer she was expecting, but Cheri makes the most of it. Would she ever willingly go back and do it again?

Island Dresses by Roderick J. Robison tells the story of a young girl who finds herself facing a situation she really wants no part of. Cheri can hate it or she can accept what is happening and maybe even come to enjoy herself. Her adventure is heart-warming and quite natural while the story proves to be somewhat educational and informative as well. The action portrays a simpler way of life – a return to basics that many children don’t have the opportunity to experience. A young reader will certainly appreciate the connection they feel through the characters to a wonderful setting and interesting events.
