Most children and many adults are afraid of the unknown. Ivy is a young child who has a lot of fear. In Ivy and the Hummingbird by Janice McMorris, Ivy discovers that most things she feared were actually nice. Ivy used to fear the croaking of frogs and the hooting of owls. With the help of her sibling and cousin, she learned to have fun with these noises. Her greatest discovery was a noisy, flying thing that made a loud buzzing sound. She faces her fear with the help of her grandmother and finds out the buzzing sound came from the fast flapping of a hummingbird’s wings. She learned they are friendly. Facing our fears is one of the best ways to overcome them. Changing fear into a fun game will also help us become more confident and less fearful.
Janice McMorris understands fear and how to overcome it. In Ivy and the Hummingbird, Janice shows youngsters how Ivy used to be afraid of everything until she faced her fear and learned to enjoy life. Knowing how paralyzing fear can be, Janice wants children to learn to overcome fear and live a life of victory. She has Ivy overcome her fears and enjoy hummingbirds. This book is beautifully illustrated by Estelle Corke. Her artwork brings the story to life. Learning to share your fears with those who accept and love you can lead to a life of confidence. Support often comes from family, but close friends can also help. Share your fear, then with your encourager, face your fears to overcome them. I highly recommend this book to help children overcome their fears and learn the beauty of nature.
