Jesus in Our Time by Nilanjana Sanyal is an insightful and beautiful story about one woman’s spiritual journey, a story that captures the political and social issues of contemporary society with forensic clarity. When the story begins, the reader is introduced to a couple having an interesting conversation as the news comes over on the television. The news reports claim that a volunteer posted with the ICRC in Ethiopia has mysteriously disappeared and the couple is worried it could be their daughter. And it is, indeed, Catherine Norton, their daughter, a Millennium and a brave, selfless woman. It is at a time when Ethiopia is reeling with upheavals and social unrest, demanding for a democratic society.
This wonderful story begins with Katherine’s disappearance. Watch Katherine as she explores her sexuality, evolves into a confident woman, and takes control of her destiny. Readers will love the themes that are woven into this story — sexuality, politics, social issues, family, friendship, religion, and many more. The writing is beautiful and at times it sounds cryptic.
There were moments when I had the impression that I was reading some notes or clippings, but it made sense all the same. Nilanjana Sanyal’s book is unique in many ways and I enjoyed the concept behind it. Many readers will find Jesus in Our Time relevant, humorous, and particularly loaded with insights. I loved the message of the book.
