Joaquin Around Washington, DC: A Doggy Adventure by Joaquin the Dog and Julie Dugan is a children’s picture book that describes Joaquin’s trip to the Washington, DC area. Through the eyes of Joaquin, we learn about different areas in Washington and many key attractions there. These include the White House, the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument, among others. Joaquin describes in detail the city of Washington, DC itself, along with parts of the neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia that encompass the overall metropolitan area. The book ends with a Did You Know? section that highlights numerous facts about the Washington, DC metropolitan area and its landmarks. The book also lists social media contact details, encouraging readers to connect.
Joaquin the Dog and Julie Dugan provide children with a unique way to learn about a city, in this case, the capital of the United States. By showing high-quality, color pictures, Joaquin Around Washington, DC lets children see different things from his perspective. This makes learning much more interesting than simply reading text. The Did You Know? section at the end of the book provides some facts that even I, as an adult, did not know. Finally, Joaquin’s brief anecdotes, e.g., eating ice cream, add a realistic touch to the overall story. For all of these reasons, I highly recommend this book to all readers, particularly those with small children. I look forward to reading more of Joaquin the Dog’s tales.
