To the Africa's Bravest Creatures series, Patricia Furstenberg adds Book 3, Jock of the Bushveld: Africa’s Best Loved Dog Hero. This is a heartwarming true story of a runt puppy born in South Africa that was given a second chance by a man named Sir Patrick Percy FitzPatrick. Traveling together in the open areas of South Africa, Jock and FitzPatrick were closer than close, better than the best of friends, pure hearts that found their life’s light together. Jock of the Bushveld shares some wonderful messages that will enable anyone to understand how important it is to give second chances with an open heart, gentle hands and a loving, nurturing soul.
Jock of the Bushveld is a beautifully told story with wonderful pictures of Jock, the dog, through his life with FitzPatrick that help the reader fall in love with the runt puppy as surely as his owner did. The plot is very heartwarming and enlightening as dog and man find comfort and solace in their life together in South Africa. I absolutely loved the characters and how they hunted together and shared everything they needed. Warm fires, food, companionship, love and understanding were enough to bond Jock and FitzPatrick together in what would have otherwise been a lonely life. Although Jock of the Bushveld is a children’s story, I recommend Patricia Furstenberg’s tale to anyone of any age because it is an easy read that is easy to identify with and understand, as well as the positive messages within the text that are a strong indicator of how anyone can benefit from a love born of a second chance.
