Jordan and the Fosters by Joe Dinicola centers on how a loving relationship must be founded on trust. As a stray dog found by a rescue, Jordan’s life experience had made him fearful of people. No matter how much kindness was offered, Jordan could not relinquish his need to withdraw. His pervasive tendency to shy away from human contact had made him unadoptable. When showcased for adoption, he didn’t come up to his cage door in an attempt to make friends with possible owners. This was a primary reason he had stayed with several foster families, making forming bonds seemingly impossible. When taken in by the Fosters, his attitude didn't change until he met their dog, Fiona. Although old and no longer wanting to play with a younger dog, Fiona saw how difficult it was for Jordan to adjust, and they became fast friends. From that time on, the story centers on what it means to love and value others.

While the narrative focuses on the life of a damaged dog, there is more to be learned. The story of Jordan underscores the importance of reaching out to the less fortunate and expressing humane compassion. In compelling and affecting prose, Joe Dinicola tells a tale that would likely inspire a child and parent to explore ways to express care for others. Embracing the gift of showing what true kindness means—much like what Jordan found with the Fosters in the wake of Fiona’s encouragement—is a message that resonates. One of Fiona’s greatest gifts to Jordan was showing him what being part of a family means. In expanding a young reader’s awareness, they will likely see the world through a shifting prism. Jordan’s story, which traces what it means to move from fear to faith, will likely evoke feelings that promote sensitive awareness of life-affirming acts that impact both mind and heart.
