In The Gloomlands Chronicles: Secrets of the Fae by Sam Rininger, over a century ago, fae creatures and humans lived in harmony, but a dragon attack led the fae to retreat to their realm. Karo, a twelve-year-old girl, believes her parents hid something important from her, and she must uncover it. Karo possesses some magical abilities, yet she struggles to control them. One day, due to a threat, all the parents except one learn they must leave to attend to a matter elsewhere. Shortly after, because they were born into a legacy of adventure, Karo, Elara, Xander, and Orson decide to go in search of a faerie ring, despite being warned to avoid faeries and their magic. Soon, they learn about the risks of faerie rings. After releasing some mischievous faeries into their realm, the young adventurers must now satisfy the faeries' demands and return them to their own realm before the autumn equinox to avoid unleashing terror on their world.
In The Gloomlands Chronicles: Secrets of the Fae, Sam Rininger presents a terrific group of children of powerful adventurers, each well-written and bringing entirely different personalities to the group in their quest to uncover long-buried secrets. This entrancing story fascinated me mainly due to the details about the faeries and how the group of friends worked together to make things right. Those who love faerie stories will adore this thrilling adventure, filled with magic, mystery, enduring friendships, teamwork, mythical beings, secrets, and an impending threat. Boys and girls alike will surely enjoy reading this story, which not only features faeries but also a tiny house troll, nixies, nymphs, pookas, and more.
