Bruce E. Arrington’s Josh Anvil and the Indomitable Power follows fourteen-year-old Josh, a Louisiana teenager whose alien-given abilities let him heal people and create living things from thought. After escaping federal agents who blame him for murders he did not commit, Josh returns home to find his family held hostage by FBI agent Niris. Josh has survived other worlds before, yet a new danger now comes from inside his own mind, because anything he imagines can become real even while he sleeps. When teenagers he has previously healed begin disappearing across the world, evidence points toward Raga, the alien ruler preparing Earth for conquest. Josh must protect everyone he loves while discovering whether his greatest gift may be changing into something he can no longer contain.

Bruce E. Arrington’s Josh Anvil and the Indomitable Power is book four in the series. Arrington goes from strength to strength, and this, like its predecessors, is brilliant young adult urban fantasy. The best part is that Josh still feels fourteen. I love it when he gives up his place in a birthday basketball game so John Summers, a former friend trying to repair their relationship, can play beside Troy, Josh’s lifelong best friend. It is a small choice, but it says everything about why Josh is so likable. The floating city is one of my favorite settings, especially when five frightened Tibetan girls discover rooms copied from the homes they remember. Kodi, the humanoid companion living with Josh’s family, is the most fascinating character to me once his former life as a conqueror comes out. Well-written and imaginative, this will delight readers who enjoy young adult fantasy.
