Emily Harper’s, June Jensen and the Shield of Quell is a madcap mystery of “Who done it?” June Jensen finds herself in the middle of a very messy misadventure. June’s grandfather, the Professor, was once a renowned archaeologist and teacher. The Professor is admired by historical society, until he is blamed for stealing a treasured artifact. Twenty years after the scandal, the Professor has dementia, and June is his full time care giver. June is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of a secret organization - the Alliance. She is invited to be a member of an elite group of guardians, commissioned to oversee the safety of the country’s most treasured possessions and secrets. The group is taken to see the priceless artifacts they will be guarding during the museum’s upcoming gala. The moment of unveiling is shocking, for behind the curtain is the very artifact her grandfather was accused of stealing – The Shield of Quell. From this moment on chaos erupts. Is this really the Shield of Quell? Where has it been all of these years? And how did it get into the museum? Trusting no one, June sets out to discover the truth about the shield.
Emily Harper portrays a strong and zany heroine in June Jensen and the Shield of Quell. She balances her protagonist with a charming, wealthy male best friend and a chauffeur “wanna-be playwright” as her sidekick. Not to mention, her rather eccentric grandfather. The characterization is delightfully wacky, yet shrewdly intriguing. Set in England, the story highlights the admiration and loyalty the characters have for their country’s history and priceless artifacts. The thoughts, feelings and emotions of the protagonist are revealed throughout the narrative. The action is steady, although it is the continual dialogue that keeps the plot moving. English wit and sarcasm is heard in every conversation. The novel has several unforgettable one-liners, and my favorite is: “The great ones, June Bug, don’t live for today; they live for eternity.” I believe that statement sums up this story perfectly.
