Quintus Fisher's King Among the Stars commences on a desert planet, Jennada, in a slave camp dedicated to mining Tharium, a coveted mineral. Our protagonist is a young Triad slave named Fourteen, who has no memories of his previous life before arriving on Jennada. Groomed by his harsh environment and brutal experiences to prioritize self-preservation above everything else, Fourteen surprisingly intervenes when a sadistic Rakim guard starts unjustly assaulting an old man whom he considers part of his surrogate family. Suddenly, Fourteen's seemingly meaningless existence is disrupted by a mystical voice in his head, strange dreams of a past he can't remember, newly developed supernatural powers, and an escape from his imprisoned life. In a galaxy-wide battle against a tyrannical Telosian Empire, will Fourteen and his new companions survive the thrilling journey that awaits them?
Steeped in suspense, action, adventure, and a well-depicted nascent romance, King Among the Stars is guaranteed to earn the approval of sci-fi aficionados, especially fans of novels like Leviathan Wakes and Dune. The world-building is excellent, the stakes are high, and the pacing is perfect! This absorbing galactic adventure is marked by excellent characterization and a thought-provoking plot. It was refreshing following Fourteen's character development, from a hardened teen who didn't see a future for himself to a young man driven to confront the overwhelming forces around him. I marveled at how he didn't let his family history determine his identity in the end, nor did he let his past prevent him from achieving his higher calling. The mysterious voice he interacts with and his supernatural powers are an intriguing addition to the storyline. Quintus Fisher is a master at exploring themes of social justice, corruption, survival, unity, and self-discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Fans of sci-fi space operas with plenty of twists and turns will love this book.
