Most of us have heard of “Mad Cow Disease” but few of us are familiar with Creutzfeldt- Jacob Disease, or CJD. In Kingston’s Project by Carrie Beckort, readers will learn of the devastating effects of CJD on victims and their families. The “mad cow” form is only one variation of CJD. According to a very informative section supplied at the end of the story, thankfully CJD is rare, affecting only one person per million. But deterioration is swift and it's always fatal.

Kingston’s Project is based around the genetic form of CJD, and Carrie Beckort uses it to bring together an interesting cast of characters. We have the wealthy Mr. Kingston, the victim of CJD, hiring the protagonist, Sarah, to handle one last important project for him. There will be no extensions on the project as it will end with his death. Making her job difficult is the fact that she is still reeling and healing from the sudden death of her husband and child in a car accident 2 years earlier: will she have the strength to see this project through? And complicating her task is the fact that she must cover up for Kingston as his condition worsens quickly and he has forbidden her to inform his family of his imminent death.

Believable characters, an interesting story-line, romance and good old family values are all well captured by Carrie Beckort in Kingston's Project. Adding to its value is the section at the end of the story that informs the reader about CJD. For someone who never planned to write a book, Carrie Beckort has done an excellent job on her first novel.
