Latkes and Lefse is a heartwarming children’s picture book by Diane Namm with illustrations by Maria Hecher. Siblings Josh, Nora, and Jacob are looking forward to their school’s event celebrating fall and winter holiday foods. The only challenge is that each family can only bring in one dish representing their culture, and the siblings enjoy festive treats from two of their favorite winter holidays. As the children consider the best option for their family, readers learn about several fascinating and delicious foods from other holiday traditions such as Diwali and Succoth. Cheerful and vibrant illustrations throughout enhance the positive tone of this engaging story. Delightful recipes are included for children and their families to create homemade holiday goodies.
Latkes and Lefse by Diane Namm is an uplifting story about beloved holiday traditions and the unique foods involved in celebrating these special days worldwide. Many readers will resonate with Josh, Nora, and Jacob’s dilemma in choosing just one favorite holiday dish, as food plays an important role in how cultures recognize and enjoy significant holidays. I learned about many new foods, from moon cakes to Ma’amouls, which all sound very appetizing. Readers will enjoy following along with the siblings as they thoughtfully and creatively devise a solution to what to bring to the feast that honors their family’s heritage. The many holidays and treats shared will spark interest in learning more about other cultures and their traditions. This is a highly recommended read.
