Houses, like a living entity, get to know the people who live in them. If houses could talk, they’d have many stories to tell. Author Anne Lacourrege touches on this concept in Lily’s Mysterious Odyssey. This story is about a young girl named Lily, who discovers items from a different family hidden in the walls of her house. Curious about her house’s history, Lily dreams of its former residents. Her dream transports her back to the time when her house belonged to Captain Harry and his friendly family, who made Lily feel welcome.

The illustrations by Joshua Wichterich have a cartoon watercolor effect that enhances the story’s concept of watery travel, ship captains, and treasure. The watercolor illustrations and the use of the third-person point of view complement each other in a way that makes the story feel observed instead of read. It feels cozy. Themes of family, friendship, discovery, and compassion are highlighted as Lily finds the treasures in the walls, meets the family, learns about their lives, makes friends with Anne, and returns home. Anne Lacourrege plays with the idea of dreams versus reality by blurring the line between the storm happening while Lily is with Captain Harry and the one that Lily wakes up to in the real world. The blurring ties the two worlds together in a way that keeps the young reader’s imagination engaged. Lily’s Mysterious Odyssey is a sweet children’s adventure that young readers will enjoy. I enjoyed the story and illustrations.
