Long Road Home by Mary Jane Morgan is a modern romance that takes place in the country, among ranches and horses. Megan, the main character, has been away at school, but when she finds out that her father has shot himself, she leaves school and her friends and a budding career, and comes home to find her sister unable to speak, her mother lost in a world of despair, and the ranch on the brink of ruin. Then there is Brett, the sexy next door neighbor that was her high school crush. He wants to help; can she accept his help and stay independent? Could she have a relationship with Brett after what his father has done? Will she be able to save the ranch? As Megan sifts through the problems surrounding her and helps her sister start to talk again, she finds out some dark secrets about her father, her mother, and Brett’s father. Will these new secrets come between her and Brett?

I was drawn to Long Road Home because of the horse element. Being a rider myself, I am always on the lookout for a good story that involves horses in some way. This book definitely had horses and, combined with the romance, made for an interesting read. Megan, her mother, Suzanne, and Lauren, her sister, as characters must face hard issues: death, betrayal, and addiction. There is an interesting twist in the story; it is written from the viewpoint of the one who is not addicted but suffering the fallout of someone else’s addiction that is close to them. In many books dealing with addiction, the majority are written from the addicted person’s viewpoint and their feelings, but not with this book. I find it courageous of Ms. Morgan to use this viewpoint.
