Love Again by Paula Mowery is a fairly short novel aimed mainly at the Christian women’s fiction market. It is the story of the friendship and love that grows between Jenna, newly appointed Children’s Minister at Myrtle Beach, and ex-Marine Ben in the aftermath of the tragic loss of his wife, Alyssa. Ben moves back in with his own parents who help him care for his two young children, and Jenna gets to know them and Ben and his family through the Day Care center and her children’s work. Both Jenna and Ben believe God has a plan for their lives and, despite setbacks, find He has good things in store for them both. But can Ben manage to persuade his in-laws not to seek custody of their grandchildren, and will he allow himself to move on and fall in love again?
Love Again is a gentle and hopeful story of happiness emerging after tragedy. It is also about faith and trust in God. The characters depict Christian relationships and commitments. I love Ben’s devotion to his children, and determination to pick himself up and find a new way forward. Jenna is an open and inspiring young woman who is willing to follow God’s calling, and finds that, when she does, life evolves and changes in a delightful and fulfilling way. Paula Mowery’s writing style is very readable and the plot unfolds at a good pace without any over-lingering on the details – this makes for a fast moving plot with a few twists and surprises. I liked the humor in the situation between Peter, Jenna’s rather self-absorbed and immature ex, and her courageous and sensible decision to follow her own path in life and leave him behind. Both Jenna and Ben are characters who evolve and change through the story: we see Jenna’s caring nature mature and Ben’s realization that his God will provide for him and his family. A story that will entertain and inspire fans of Christian fiction.
