Scott Antwan’s poetry collection “Love Drunk” follows a lover through the many stages of love to its eventual end. The speaker in the book begins by expressing a desire to find true love, then finds an object of his affection to pine for, and then has the opportunity to enjoy some time with his lover before the lover vanishes and leaves the speaker in distress. The speakers love is obviously a tortured one, and he spends many sleepless nights dreaming of and longing for his lover to return. The progression of the book is very natural, and at the end Antwan even includes several poems from his next book, “Love Hangover.”
There is a lot in this book that the speaker calls love but is described more as lust. The book is divided into different chapters, probably based on the different feelings the speaker passes through as he comes to terms with the loss of love, and I think the book would benefit from a table of contents to help readers visualize and navigate these stages.
I am an avid poetry reader, and although I found some of the poems interesting, they might appeal more to someone with a more cursory knowledge of poetry who was looking for an artistic expression to mirror their own feelings about love. Although one’s taste in poetry is very subjective, jilted lovers and anyone who has ever had their heart broken will be able to relate to the longing and agony Antwan expresses in his book.
